So we’re really getting into the nitty gritty of the list now, the top three and we’re gonna start it off with a bang.
Aladdin is in my opinion, pretty much the best animated movie of all time. Now I know what some of you guys might be saying. I drank the Disney kool-aid, I’m ignoring people like studio Ghibli, I’m this or the other….but really I’m not, just hear me out. Aladdin was for me the kind of ultimate storm of everything a movie, far less, an animation should be. In 1992 Disney released the feature film Aladdin, and my world has never been the same. Aladdin is the story of a “street rat” named Aladdin who comes across a magical lamp, that contains a genie, bound to grant Aladdin three wishes.
Now everyone knows, that the genie was voiced by the late great Robin Williams, but at the time, animation was pretty much left up to voice actors and Robin William’s the genie was one of the first times such a big named star was taking on a job like this. The genie I one of the best parts of this movie. Pretty much every line is madly quotable, and he infuses such an energy into the movie every time he is on screen. The genie is also one of the characters in this movie that goes through a really emotional journey that you feel every bit of.
Now the story of this movie, on the surface is a love story, but if we look deeper, there is so much more. On the one hand we have the story of redemption of a character who has had to steal to eat, and lied to try and find his place in the world, who then has to find a way to right those wrongs, amidst falling in love. We have the princess who is forced to rebel against her father, who is loving, but stuck in his old ways, and find a way to follow her heart and not let down her people. We have the adviser to the king, who’s ambition forces him down a part of darkness and turns him into the villain. The king who wants the best for his daughter and his people, but maybe can’t see things as clearly as he thinks. And of course we have the genie. A character who both has to advise and appease his master, but hope that one day he can be set free.
All together Aladdin from start to end is an amazing movie, and my third favourite of all time. Also, who doesn’t know all the words to A Whole New World?
