Review : Fantastic Beasts and where to find them

“The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.”

If I had to describe or sum this movie up in one word it would be “Charming”. This is first time we are both going back to the wizarding world created by JK Rowling, and the first time we are getting a new and different look at her world. This time we are taken both to the past and for the first time, across the pond to 1920’s America. They do very well here also to make this new environment feel both new and familiar, just different enough from what we know and love. All the new characters here are also super well done and feel like we knew them for much longer than this one movie. They all come with their own quirks and charming traits that work together really well when the group is all together. I know they plan to make this a full on franchise and possibly 5 movies, and so far, they did a good job of laying enough hooks down for later movies and development. All in all Fantastic Beasts is more or less the movie that Harry Potter fans were waiting for. The movie does have its issues and they will seem greater to those who aren’t Potter fans, but it should be enjoyable to either party.

Review Score : 8 out of 10

  1. Nice review, I agree with the rating you have given it.
Your comment on the characters hit home with me, it did feel like we knew them for more than one film. Jacob was my favourite, his comic relief he provided, the friendship with Newt and the budding romance with Queenie were good inclusions.
