Review : Collateral Beauty

“Retreating from life after a tragedy, a man questions the universe by writing to Love, Time and Death. Receiving unexpected answers, he begins to see how these things interlock and how even loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.”

Collateral Beauty is a movie that requires a lot from the viewer. It’s asks for them to buy totally into the films premise, and to also not question that as the movie goes on. This I think is going to lead to a lot of people either just not buying in and as a result not liking this movie at all, or they are going to buy in and still have some problems. A major part of the plot of this movie, resolves around a certain premise, that in of itself, is a lot to swallow. The result can seem like a movie trying to create something where it hasn’t been earned, and that robs the movie of its emotional momentum. This can cause some of the more telling scenes of emotion seem almost comical at times. All in all Collateral Beauty has a great cast of actors, but seems to get in it own way, and will leave a lot of viewers on one side of the aisle or the other.

Review : Passengers

“A spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet and transporting thousands of people has a malfunction in its sleep chambers. As a result, two passengers are awakened 90 years early.”

So Passengers as all the ingredients for a really compelling and interesting movie, it just doesn’t quite get there. Everything here is solid, the world is rich and well built. There are some moments of real acting in here too, that show off the talent of the small cast here. There are moments of excitement and intrigue, as are there moments of tension and action, but overall, something about this movie is just missing. Everything in this movie is right there, its right on the edge, the cusp of something great, it just never really gets there. You’re not going to have bad time watching this movie or anything like that, but it just doesn’t have those stand out moments that a movie like this need to set itself apart. it just need s some more pop, and its not a fault of the actors or their acting, its the script. Its a tight script for sure, but it just gets a bit plain, and that slows down the movie more than it should at times. Pratt and Lawrence have really good chemistry, and they form a very believable relationship, but the movie could have also gone down some roads that were only hinted at with these characters. All in all Passengers is a solid movie that can entertain, but of you have higher hopes then you’re going to be let down.

Review : Assassin’s Creed

“When Callum Lynch explores the memories of his ancestor Aguilar and gains the skills of a Master Assassin, he discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society.”

Has the curse of horrible video game movies been broken? To put it simply, no. This movie has a pretty major flaw, and it’s also a result of the movie itself being based on a video game. The best part and the major reason Assassins Creed is so popular, is because of its ability to put the player in the past,  which the movie does also but it’s a double edged sword. The movie is at its best when it goes back, but unlike the game, it can’t stay there as much. And it’s not that the parts set in present day are bad, they just are not as compelling as the parts set in the past. To be fair to the movie, that was always going to be an uphill battle for it, and it does struggle with it. There are good bits here, the visuals are trippy and surreal, and the action is solid, but it does slow down at points. All in all Assassins Creed is just an okay product, but it was maybe biting off more than it could chew from the start.

Review : Rogue One – A Star Wars story

‚Äč”The Rebellion makes a risky move to steal the plans for the Death Star, setting up the epic saga to follow.”

If you’ve been waiting for a one of the new Star Wars movies to be a let down, THIS AINT IT SON. Rogue One is an extremely well crafted movie, that not only holds some of the best CGI I’ve ever seen in my life, but it’s also got a great and compelling story. If you were a fan of the force awakens this movie KS certainly a departure from that in as far as tone and intensity. The movie does an impressive job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, even when we should have an idea of how this story plays out. It’s also littered with great Easter eggs and references for hardcore fans to get a hold of. Rogue One is a film about war, and when we get that war is when this movie shines brightest. The cast is full of characters that we don’t get too much back story for, but we get enough of their personalities to make up for it. This is a much darker Star Wars film, and even with the idea of hope being it’s corner stone, it doesn’t relent on its portrayal of war. You don’t have to be a Star Wars fan to love this movie, but if you are, you’ll love it all the more. Also….Vader.

Review : Office Christmas Party

“When his uptight CEO sister threatens to shut down his branch, the branch manager throws an epic Christmas party in order to land a big client and save the day, but the party gets way out of hand…”

Project X meets any Christmas movie ever, and you get Office Christmas Party. This movie checks all the boxes yes, but not always satisfyingly so. There is a solid and funny cast here, at least individually, but they don’t always add up to something greater than individual talent. Like, theres potential here, but the movie gets there sometimes, and not other times. It does get there enough times to keep you chuckling throughout the film yes, but it also never gets to the real peaks it could to get those real belly laughs. And thats the real let down of this movie, you can keep seeing the potential, and you get close to it a few times, just close enough to keep you going. All in all there really isn’t that much to say about this movie. Its a pretty simple premise, and it has solid acting for that premise, and while its not the most predictable movie of all time, you can guess where its going. If you like these actors, or you want something to scratch that Christmas itch, then you can check this movie out, but keep your expectations low.
