Review : A Cure for Wellness

“An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps but soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem.”

A cure for wellness is a movie that demands attention, but at the same time, it can be demanding of some viewers. This movie if filled with beautiful and poignant imagery, that juxtaposes against the nature of its narrative at large. This movie is both a question and an answer. It teases us as it slowly rolls forward, and it does do a good job at keeping your attention for the most part, but it does also feel like the movie is about 30 minutes too long. And while some streamlining would have made for a bit more compelling of a story, that probably means it would have to cut a lot of its imagery and world building. So a give and take depending on which of the two you’d prefer. All in all I think a cure for wellness is a compelling enough narrative, that may be too demanding for some viewers.

Review : John Wick – Chapter 2

“After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.”

When a movie like John Wick came out, it caught everyone off guard, and became this cult hit that was so good it couldn’t help but blow up. Then when the inevitable sequel comes out, all are on it, the bar is raised and all the pressure is on. John Wick chapter 2 basically takes that bar, and does some pull ups with it. This movie took everything about the first movie that we loved, the mythology, the characters, the action, and said “how can we make this bigger and deeper?” And they really do. Much is added to the myth and lure of this universe, we get new locations and set pieces, and we get ohhh so many head shots. If you liked the first John Wick, there is no way you don’t like the sequel. The movie even does a great job setting up a tense and exciting third movie, but it doesn’t do so at the expense of this movie. All in all, John Wick 2 is a rip roaring run through the deep bloody streets of the assassin underbelly filled with gold coins, blood oaths, and a sprinkling of knives to the heart.

Review : Split

images-2

“Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities, and must try and escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.”

Split is one of those movies that might actually and no pun intended, leave audiences split. It a Shyamalan movie in every sense of the word, which is sometimes very good and other times…ridiculous. But its a line that when he walks properly, he walks almost perfectly. This movie is movie built on tension, and a slow and steady release of information, and those are both vital for this movie to work. As we go deeper and deeper, we keep getting just enough new information to keep things grounded and tight. Then towards the end when the movie starts to release all of that tension, its speeds up to help keep convert that slow tension from earlier to a fast paced explosive one. For the majority of this movie we get one of the many characters played by James McAvoy, and he plays them to perfection. He seamlessly is able to switch and swap and drop and pick up these personalities and their unique expressions and tones thats done so convincingly, that you never question that aspect of the story. There is a twist of sorts at the end of this movie, and to be fair its more of a reveal than a twist. About 90 seconds before it happened i found myself muttering a phrase to myself and wondering if thats where he was going to take it, and to my surprise and delight he did, and i applaud him for it. Split is a real pulse pounding, heart beating kind of thriller that I highly recommend.
