Review : Tom and Jerry

“Adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera property, which reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry.”

Its interesting how most movies targeted at younger audiences are made. And this movie is very clearly made for younger audiences, with a few hints and nods at those who may be fans of the original cartoon. The animation however is both very good and very interesting as its a combination of being done in CGI, but using a very cel shaded style or finish to it which is much more inline with the look of traditional animation where these characters come from. There is also a very clear and deliberate point of having the actors here really “over act” a lot of there scenes, in conjunction with some very deliberate joke telling and physical humour. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re a certain age it really works, but it just makes those scenes stand out compared to other parts of the movie where things are much more organic, even with animated characters on screen. There is some humour here for adults also, and the jokes that land did make me laugh. This movie is a lot of fun to be honest, but I feel like its just missing something to really bridge the gap between just a “kids movie” and something more or better. It’s even hard for me to put an exact finger on it, but there is just something about this movie that feels like its missing, something to separate it from the crowd. All in all, if you’re taking a younger person, or you just want something nostalgic and not too serious, Tom and Jerry is an entertaining use of your time, but maybe one thats better for a streaming service, than a cinema outing.
